How to Choose an Antivirus Software to Avoid Scams and FraudJul 21, 2022
I want to start off this post by stating that you need an antivirus program on your computer, tablet, or any device. You need it regardless of whether it is an Apple, Samsung, Dell or a device created by some other manufacturer.
The question is, which one do you choose?
The one that came with your Dell? The free one? The one your friend recommends?
It is a wide ranging landscape to pick from, and if you are not careful you will find your bill going from the advertised "Free" or "$9.99 per year" to upwards of $100 per year.
It is important to have one of these programs installed on your computer in order to protect yourself from viruses, malware, and other online threats. But with so many different programs available, it can be difficult to decide which one is right for you.
Tips for choosing an antivirus program to detect and prevent fraud
When choosing an antivirus program, it is important to consider what type of protection you need.
Do you use your computer for basic tasks like browsing the web and checking your email?
A basic program is all you will need.
Do you download files or use social networking sites?
You will want a more comprehensive program that can protect you against more sophisticated threats.
It is also important to consider the features offered by different antivirus programs.
Real-time Protection: the antivirus program will scan your computer for threats as you use it.
Scheduled Scanning: the antivirus program will scan your computer at regular intervals.
Spam filters and parental controls are offered in some programs as well.
Also it is important to note, that if you don’t have a speedy machine to begin with, some of these antivirus solutions can make your computer or tablet experience extremely sluggish. This is why, often times, people end up disabling their antivirus program or uninstalling it completely.
Personally, I love the active portion of antivirus. If I go to a scam website or am redirected to one accidentally, it prevents the page from loading and performing malicious actions. Even the most skilled computer user will accidentally end up at a malicious site one time or another.
There is an antivirus program out there that will fulfill your protection needs, while preserving your cherished browsing experience. Finding the right one will take some careful experimentation.
Comparing antivirus programs
When comparing different antivirus programs, be sure to read reviews from independent sources to get an objective opinion. This can save you a bunch of time from testing yourself, but be aware of the article's source.
Personally, I like to visit Reddit and find user channels that discuss antivirus programs in an unbiased fashion. Be aware, even in these user forums there are people from the antivirus companies who try to promote their software in an unassuming manner, but the Reddit community does a great job of policing itself.
Once you decide to try a particular antivirus program, MAKE SURE you download the program from a trusted source.
As far as a recommendation for the best free anti-virus, I personally use Avast. The free version does a great job at protecting your computer. Be aware though that they will periodically suggest you upgrade to improve your computers performance or improve your privacy. Just ignore these messages and you will have good protection.
With so many choices available, taking the time to find the best antivirus program for your needs is worth the effort. Most importantly, it is a very effective way of implementing automated protection against specific computer threats.
